Overview of Alcohol Use in England

Summary

Alcohol has played a significant role in English society for centuries, with its consumption being an important part of social customs and traditions according to (Britannica, 2023), and its resulting issues have also been present in human societies since the dawn of time, according to historical records as cited by (Room, Babor and Rehm, 2005). According to them, recent studies have made significant contributions to the public’s awareness of the relationship between drinking and certain disorders and have demonstrated the complexity and multidimensionality of the relationship between alcohol use and health consequences.

As many as 60 distinct medical disorders have been demonstrated to be causally associated with alcohol; most often, but not always, in a negative way. These disorders include cancer, heart diseases, lung failure, etc. as emphasized by (Department of Health, 2016). (Office for National Statistics, 2023) also published a report stating that COVID-19 pandemic led to increased alcohol consumption and a surge in alcohol-related mortality in England, mainly due to alcoholic liver disease. They claimed that alcohol-related deaths in England have been on the rise, with 7,551 alcohol-related deaths in 2020 as shown in Fig. 2 below….
